Description

Pheonix roebellenii

Also known as the Pygmy Date Palm, this multi-trunk palm tree is perfect for smaller yards, specimen piece, or an accent. Great addition to any landscape!

This palm can be a great indoor plant and get as tall as 5-6 feet indoors but is mostly used outdoors. Outdoors the palm usually grows at a quick pace to about 6.5 feet tall and will get about 5 feet wide in about 6 years. After that, they grow at a slower 3-4 inches per year reaching their fully mature height at about 10-12 feet. They can live up to 25-50 years.

Water Requirements: Drought tolerant, don’t overwater!

Soil: Acidic to neutral with good drainage.

Growth Rate: Slow

Bloom Time: Cream colored flowers in the spring once mature

Temperature: Hardy to about 20 F.

Pruning: Remove dead or diseased palm fronds while wearing gloves and a long-sleeved shirt. Prune at the base of the frond, about 2 to 5 inches from the trunk. Ensure it is a forceful cut so as to not tear fibers in the stem. Sterilize pruners between plants.

Tips: Can be susceptible to leaf spot, so using a preventative fungicide about once a year is a good idea!
